Start Smart Class

Start Smart Course Information

Start Smart is a free two-hour driver safety education class that targets students between the ages of 15-18 yrs.  A parent/guardian is required to attend the class with their student.  Students will only have to complete the course one time in their high school career.  Officers from the California Highway Patrol will discuss traffic avoidance techniques, collision-causing factors, student and parent responsibilities, and seatbelt usage. Students of TPHS will not be issued a parking permit and may not park on campus until they complete this course. 

Start Smart Driving is a required driver safety education class for all SDUHSD students who want to receive a parking permit for parking on campus. It is also highly recommended for any SDUHSD student drive. It is offered as a response to the numerous teen car crashes and related fatalities in our community.   All San Dieguito Union High School District students and their parents/guardians must attend a 2-hour Start Smart class to obtain a parking permit to park on their school campus.  The California Highway Patrol officers will discuss traffic avoidance techniques, collision-causing factors, driver/parent responsibilities, seat belt usage, dangers of driving under the influence, and many important safety tips.   Parents are required to remain in the class with their students for the entire 2 hours. Students must attend the class with their parents/guardians.  Attending with a friend's parent does not qualify for class credit.  
 
The class is free of charge.  
 
Start Smart classes can be taken at any SDUHSD campus and only need to be taken one time.
 
Torrey Pines High School – PAC*/Lecture Hall** classes will be held from 6:00 – 8:00p.m. and held on the following dates:
